Do you have a Speaker 1-sheet?

November 3, 2017

You can be a HOT speaker - but without the right marketing tools, you're not going to get those gigs you want.

You need to be able to promote yourself to events' organizers, corporates and anywhere else you want to contribute and do so professionally.

One way to do that is by getting a professional speaking agent. Another is by creating a Speaker 1-sheet. Contrary to what the name alludes to, it doesn't have to be 1 page. Most Speaker 1-sheets I've seen are up to 2 pages long.

The Speaker 1-sheet is your complete 'bigger picture' guide that answers:

  • Who you are and what qualifies you to speak on a subject matter.

  • What are you known for - being funny, inspiring, great storytelling, being entertaining?

  • What your speaking topics are.

  • The benefits of those speaking topics.

  • Why they should choose you. What value will your talk/s and presence at the event offer and what positive impact will that have on the event/organization?

  • Who's your audience? The design should reflect your personality and speaking style, as well as be appropriate for your specific audience. You could also mention who your specific audience is e.g. corporate, conferences, women, youth etc. but the language and design of your Speaker 1-sheet, should make that pretty obvious too.

  • Photos of your speaking or professional headshots.

  • Hot testimonials from reputable clients who've heard you speak.

  • Where can they find you? Include your contact details and links to your website or online profile.

  • Call to action! This is crucial. Unless there's an invitation to connect or book you, people might not ordinarily take the next step and get in touch.

It doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg to create either! I've had designers and copywriters assist me with mine, but I've also created some of my Speaker 1-sheets myself in Keynote.

All you need is a little creativity, someone else to proofread it (even if it's a friend with excellent English writing and grammatical skills) and a bit of time to design it all.

Here's an example of my latest Speaker 1-sheet to help spark some ideas and get you started.

Happy creating and promoting!

All the best,

Bonita
